Chapter 19

When her phone rang, Emily was sitting cross-legged like an island in a sea of handwritten letters and diaries.

“You’re not coming home today, are you?” Jack said wearily.

Emily covered her mouth to hold in a gasp. Earlier in the evening, she’d made a sandwich and a coffee. Then she’d intended to pack everything back into Andy’s box and drive back to Oxford. Except the letters and diaries had sucked her in again and she’d lost all sense of time. It was dark outside. And there were papers everywhere.

“I’m just about to leave now,” she said in a panic.

“It’s ten o’clock,” Jack said.

She looked at her watch, not believing him. Tears stung her eyes when she saw the time for herself. “I’m so sorry.”

Silence.

“Jack?” Her chest tightened and she pressed a hand to her forehead. “Jack?”

“I’ve been waiting for you all evening.”

She bit her lip until pain shot through it. “I’m sorry. I found all these letters and I thought I could take photos of them, but I lost track of time. I’m going to drive back tomorrow.” He didn’t say anything. “Jack? Are you still there?”

“I’m here.”

“You don’t mind, do you?” The silence was unnerving. “Jack?”

“Yeah?”

“Is that okay?”

“I don’t really have a choice, do I?”

God, she felt awful. “I’ll see you first thing tomorrow.”

“Unless something else comes up.”

“Don’t be like that.”

He sighed. “I miss you, and it feels like all I do is wait around wondering if you’re going to come home.”

She hated how vulnerable he sounded. It might be easier if he was angry, but he just sounded hurt and it was way worse. All she wanted to do was wrap him in a big hug. “I know, and I really am sorry.”

“I would have arranged to come there for a weekend if I’d known. I could’ve come this weekend.”

“I really was going to come home today.” She should have gone home hours ago. “I promise I’ll be home tomorrow. Okay?”

“Fine.” He sounded detached and like he didn’t believe her at all. She could hardly blame him.

She stood to pick her way out of the mess of letters. “You know what – I’m going to pack everything up now and get in the car. I just want to see you.”

“It’s after ten,” he reminded her. “And it’s a three-and-a-half-hour drive. I miss you but I don’t want you driving through the night.”

“But I feel so bad for not coming home today. And I hate you being angry with me.”

He didn’t argue the fact.

“I’m tired,” he said finally. “I’m going to bed. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“I love you,” she said quickly. “Jack?” He’d hung up. Emily covered her face with her hands as she stood in the window. She was such an idiot.

After a few deep breaths, she called her mum.

“Everything okay?” her mum asked. “Are you back home?”

“No.” The lump in her throat was painful.

“What’s wrong?”

“I messed up. I found all these old letters and I lost track of time. Jack’s so upset that I didn’t come home. I feel awful.
